Skit
Oh boy, I can’t wait to paint and then get home to my family. You’re getting retired right now, old man. No way. I have a family. Please don’t.
Intro
Dirty Down rust paint. Is it good, bad, overrated, underrated, perfectly rated? We will find out today the ins and outs of this particular effects paint. Also featuring today is the AK number two flat brush. Because you saw from the video, the uh the skit, we uh yeah, we executed the monster brush. He’s dead. Now, on to the review.
Dirty Down Instructions
This is the brochure by Goblin Hut for Dirty Down. Goblin Huts, the the company. And we flip it to the back. These are the steps to use. And we have kind of two two negatives. It’s they’re not really negatives, but negative number one, again, not a negative really, is some people have reported to us that they appeared glossy when they dried even though they were expecting matte. Guys, it’s only because you didn’t shake it properly.
That’s basically it. Just shake it. Just really like shake it. Sorry, I was highlighting this. It’s this. But yeah, just shake it. Um, honestly, my recommendation on the way from your room to, I don’t know, your basement where you paint, just shake it on the way there. That’s about 30 seconds shaking already. and then add another shaking on your desk, uh, you’re pretty much solid.
Spillage Issues
Dirty down complaint number two and the final complaint is that sometimes the bottles crack, but it’s more of a carrier issue rather than goblin huts issue. I’m sure there was no intention for them to crack in transit and we do pack this thing like an asylum patient with a padded room and everything. Paper and bubble wrap that Yeah, it we use a lot and sometimes it’s they it still happens.
They are aware of this issue. At least I think so anyway because the newest editions dirty down gore iron glass jars. These things are sturdy, very sturdy. So uh when you’re shaking this bottle, uh be gentle. Um don’t squeeze. It may crack in your hand.
Example Product 1 – Sword
So we will be trying out the rust on various products like this Primaris Lieutenant. The sword specifically is one very nice target. So yes, I will be painting this off screen, at least the sword part of it, and then we will be applying the rust on it. While the sword is drying, this is when we begin to shake. Do it for more than a minute, preferably two. See? 2 minutes if you’re doing it by hand.

Applying a Gloss Varnish
Now the paint job is dry. What I’m doing here is applying a thin coat of matte varnish. You don’t have to do this if your paint’s been dried for more than 24 hours. And why am I doing this, you ask? That’s because Dirty Down is solvent based acrylics. A really strong one at that. Stronger than even to me, I’m pretty sure.
So, to uh make extra sure that my paint doesn’t kind of like lift up or crack or melt or bubble, I’m doing this. The matte varnish will take the hit um and protect the paints underneath. Again, if it’s been dried for more than 24 hours, you can skip this part.
Smell Test
The moment of truth. Let’s open it. No, I’m just joking. Don’t sniff it. Please don’t sniff paint or glue or any of the sort. Oh, I actually don’t need to sniff it. It smells really bad, actually. Smells terrible. Oh my goodness.
First Application
Actually, it says to put a lot. So, we’re going to be putting a lot be soaking this thing. Yeah, it’s just to put a lot. There we go. I applied it really heavily. Extremely heavily. Now, I was going to put it on the gold, but putting it on gold doesn’t really make any sense. So, I’m going to apply it on other things that are silver. While that’s drying, take a sponge brush or your mom’s makeup sponge.
Removing Excess Paint
This is Tamiya’s weathering sponge. And I’m just dabbing it on to the sword, removing anything excess. And look at how magnificent it looks. And this is just the first layer. You can keep repeating this over and over. And all you have to do is soak it in water. Maybe it’s not as strong as I expected. The fact that a little bit of water can remove it. Granted, it’s still drying, but still. I’m going to do the same thing with the second layer of this in a couple minutes. For 2 minutes. For 2 minutes. Every time before use. Two minutes. Second coat.
[Music]
Just spreading it around more so it’s a little bit more uneven. Just keep dabbing. Keep dabbing. Just keep building up that effect.
Additional Dirty Down Instructions
Another thing that’s been suggested to us by Dirty Down themselves is to mix Dirty Down with water and apply some sort of stippling action. So maybe it’s not as strong as I initially thought it was.
Stippling Technique
The solution part of it may be overstated. Use random points at random points just to build up the effect. That was the Army Painter character brush, by the way. And the paint job is all set.
Sword Close Up
It’s done. Wow. Wow. It’s Guys, this is the best rust I’ve ever seen. and I sloppily applied it. No technique besides a little bit of stippling.
Example Product 2 – Bronze Statue Mini
I have two more examples. This is number one. Say bronze statue that’s rusted. And if it does look familiar to you following us for a long time in this channel, this is the same model that I used the slap chop technique on nearly a year ago. And I just painted him uh gold, put a brown wash over him to make him look like bronze, and then I applied the rust. This is about three layers as well with the stippling and the water and the sponge removal.
Example Product 3 – Shield Mini
Finally, on a DND mini, I believe this is in an elf or human paladin, sorry. I just applied it all over, especially in the panel line right there on the edges. And then I soaked the rest of the shield. And then with my sponge, I removed a little bit of the middle irregularly, of course. And what you’re left with is this. A rustied shield. Rusty. Rusty. Yeah, it’s crusty though for sure. It’s so beautiful.
Final Close Up
Here is one final look at the trio. It just looks incredible. Wow. No matter what angle, too. Well done, Dirty Down. This is an incredible product you have. And yeah, props to you. In fact, me looking at it right now, it looks genuinely like it came out of a video game or a movie. That’s how good it is. Your demo time-lapse video on your Goblin Huts YouTube channel, it looked CG when everyone first saw it 3 years ago, but looking at it now, yeah, I believe the hype. This is crazy. No wonder it’s a bestseller. Yeah, guys, believe the hype.
Paul’s Conclusion
This is a ridiculously good paint. Probably the best of the best. Forget about Niles. Nox oxide, typhus corrosion, you know, all the Abteilung AK Vallejo pigments. Forget about it. The only thing that comes kind of close is enamel wash uh rust from AK and Ammo by MIG, but even then they’re enamel, so they kind of have to be decent. This is water-based acrylic for the most part.
There’s a little bit of a solution in here. Um, but the fact that you can kind of rinse it off, do stippling action with just water when it’s drying. Beautiful. You can even thin it down water too um in your pallet. So, excellent. The only thing that’s strong about this really is the smell. It does have a really strong smell. So, uh keep it closed at all times essentially. That being said though, regarding the product itself, it’s very quickly going away.
It is a bestseller. links down below in the description uh for the website so you can grab this bad boy. Do not miss out especially in the holiday season. Uh Black Friday is approaching and we do have the Black November promotion. Don’t forget. And guys, it’s a great gift. I promise you. Thank you guys so much for watching. And uh if you like what you saw here, what you want to see more, please like and subscribe. We hit 11K. Thank you guys. Bye-bye.
