Slap Chop Miniature Painting

Paul Does Slap Chop Miniature Painting Method

Intro

Hello guys, welcome to our store and welcome to the most under represented and underappreciated part of the store. Uh that is the Wizkids and DND section. Not on purpose, by the way. Uh just the natural byproduct of what our store has become over the years.

Um when we moved into this bigger location or prior to that, we envisioned having tables in the store for gaming, but that quickly went away in favor of more real estate for the actual stock. Uh, with that being said, party games like DND, which requires at least three people plus the dungeon master, so four, um, will suffer just naturally. Again, not on purpose.

But today, we’re going to be putting, uh, you know, we’re going to be shedding a light onto them and just to see uh, how it goes. is we’re going to be applying various techniques on how to paint them because at the end of the day they’re supposed to be painted almost monochromatic, just one or two colors um with and we’re going to be doing that as simply as possible.

The goal is to try to paint um a sort of mini scene where there’s three to four characters uh of different classes facing off against a boss figure that would represent to be the end of a b or a dungeon run, right? So that’s the goal. So, at least we’re going to be painting four figures. Why did I do that? Four figures today.

Store Tour

And yeah, before we get started, I just like to briefly show off what we have, right? Just various Pathfinder kits. These are the model kit versions that Wizkids released last year. Um, and we of course have the ever popular um, Wizkids versions of Critical Role uh, figures. So, if you watch Critical Role or have watched Critical Role, you’ll love them.

The Mini’s

DND figures are also pre-primed and the priming job is actually excellent. Uh Wizkids prepainted figures are terrible usually, but these figures, at least the priming jobs, have been excellent. And this goes for not just the big ones, but the small ones as well. They didn’t miss a single spot. No cracking. Uh nothing that would indicate that they primed this in a humid or frozen environment or something.

No, they’re excellent. And yeah, so I’m happy to report that uh we don’t need to use these primers. Get out of here. So yes, this is our trio. Half elf paladin, a changeling cleric, a human warlock. So one dedicated back line kind of one front line support and one full-time support versus a storm giant. Uh I think this group is kind of just screwed. Storm Giant um is rough for a mid tier, mid-level kind of group. That’s an AC16 uh 230 health if I’m not mistaken. Yeah. No, guys, let me know what builds you would use for this trio to possibly beat a Storm Giant by itself, by the way. By itself. And here he is, the big boy, the giant. Uh, and yeah, the workmanship, the quality, look at that lightning.

It’s excellent. This is on par, if not better, than some of Games Workshop’s very best. And they’re basically the bog standard or the standard in which you compare all miniature lines in the modern day, whether you like it or not. So, what we’re going to be doing is we’re going to be using the slap chop method. Uh, perfect for miniatures like this because at the end of the day, we’re going to be using contrast paints. Uh, but we’re going to be using various techniques, not just slap chop. All right, I’ll call them out when I use them.

Dry Brushing

So, the slap chop technique calls for the dry brushing uh and compounding of the effect of any gray, any white that you have. Um, so this is danger cloak, but it could be anything. And ionic, just the standard ionic white. Uh, and yeah, just dry brushing it literally everywhere. Um, that’s it. That’s the effect. And what this will do is it was it will highlight uh and emphasize the the peaks and such and the details of the figure. You’ll see. So here’s the gray applying it onto our pallet/slab and we’ll take our dry brush, dip it there.

Take our stash of paper towels and just remove the excess there. About 90% of it should be on the paper towel, pushing it deeper into the recesses of said dry brush. And once you’re satisfied, you can just apply
[Music]
You want to go a little heavier with the gray when it comes to the dry brushing.
[Music]
Even the sword right here. Now that the heaviest dry brushing known to mankind has been done, you apply the white. And this time, this will be of a lighter variety. You will remove literally probably 98% of the paint on the brush. Because I’ve removed 99.9% of the paint here, I’m confident about going a little deeper with my dry brushing. Typically, I just like the edge catch it, but I think I can go a little deeper with most of the paint removed. Um, but yeah, if you’re just uh, you know, kind of paranoid about it, yeah, just do this. Just literally like light touch like that. Barely touching at all. But I’m going to go a little deeper. This will compound the effect.

Go in a circular motion if you want to. Up to you. Yeah. Oh yeah. Now it’s looking more highlighted if that makes sense. The effect has been compounded. So we move on into picking whatever color that you want to paint this mini. But keep it thin. Use mediums instead of water as well to thin them down to retain the color of the paint when you’re thinning it. Water will not suffice for this job. Use mediums.

Paint Set

So, to paint this mini and the subsequent minis, we will be using the AK Interactive Quick Gen Paint Set AK17601. Uh some of the paint in here, this is the 36 set. This is available for what is essentially a second wave coming in around August, so keep an eye out for that second wave. Uh and yeah, I really like these paints. Um so, might as well use them. Uh they’re excellent. They’re excellent. probably the best contrast uh quality wise I would say not the best in terms of actually no they’re probably one of the best two for selection they’re quite good.

Cloth Painting

So for paints, we will be using their off-white white shadow and thinning it down with two parts of Contrast Medium 27-33 from Citadelle. Uh I just want to see some sort of cross sort of brand collaboration here. uh and we will be applying that onto the cloth uh sections of the figure. So for this painting session, this at least this part we will be using AK Synthetic Flat Brush Number Two AKB002. Uh it’s going to be excellent. Has this tip right here. Here we go. Let’s get started. And just apply it thinly.
[Music]
So, uh, once properly thinned down, just apply two thin coats of the paint. And the previous method, the slab chop method that we’ve used should enhance the effect of whatever color you were going for. and just follow the image on the box to figure out which color to put where.

Leather Painting

While this paint is drying, we will be using leather brown on every part that concerns leather. And that’s as simple as that. Again, same thing. One part this paint and then two parts contrast medium. And remember kids, two thin coats. Two thin coats.
[Music]
So now that the uh leather colors collars of this armor has been painted, Same with the skirt and, you know, the apple bottom jeans, boots with the fur, right? Uh, that’s been painted. We’re going to be mixing space gray with white shadow.

So, one part space gray, one part white shadow, and then two parts contrast medium. And we will be applying that onto the white parts on the cloth. Uh, and this will give some sort of compounding effect that’s already been set up previously.

Metallic Painting

With the effect applied, uh, I think this is time to decide whether you go metallics first or skin first. Um, yeah, you can decide. I think I’m going to go metallics first. Uh, because if it gets onto the skin that I’ve already done, I think it’s a lot harder to correct. Then for the metallics part, I would just grab your generic silver and your generic gold. In which case, this is the dark steel from the set and the gold uh two parts contrast medium one parts of these paints. Uh and apply them wherever applicable. That’s basically it.

Uh obviously the steel for the big sword uh and then the gold for the trimmings and the collar right here and a bunch of other places like the rivets for example right there. You can go silver or gold for that. Up to you. Um, for the helmet, I may have um a special paint that I’ll use for that.

Helmet and Beard Painting

I may not use the contrast or the quick gen paints for that one. So, for the gold, I’ll be using Army Painters Monster Brush BR7008. A little bit more precise uh just so I can precisely apply it onto the edges there.
[Music]
Hydration check.
[Music]
If you made it this far into the video, use the word water in a sentence.
[Music]
So, for the helmet, I’ve decided I will still be using dark steel uh on Yeah. from Quick Gen on the helmet. Uh but we will be using a slightly different effect afterwards. So, yeah, just apply it. Apply too much. Uh-oh, that’s a mistake. So, there’s a mistake there as I applied it a little too runny, but not to worry. We can clean it up.

Just grab a damp paintbrush and just wipe off the excess. There will still be, you know, the residue remaining. That’s unavoidable, but it’s easy to clean up. All you got to do is paint its regular color. I was planning to apply a little bit more white to the beard anyway, but see, majority of it if it’s gone. It’s gone. Good. So to differentiate this the um helmet from everything else, I’m going to be applying human flesh extremely thin. So this one is three parts contrast medium to one part human flesh. Uh that sounds absolutely terrible or good if you’re a cannibal. Who knows? Uh but yes, uh it’s going to be applied extremely thinly to give it a a reddish kind of metallic brown look that I kind of really like. Let’s see.

Painting the Skin

Finally, we’re going to be painting the skin. And since it’s a storm giant, it’s going to be a bluish tinge. We’re going to be using bluish gray for this. And again, same thing. Two parts contrast medium, one part of the paint. And here we go. And obviously thinly applied, right? You don’t want to mess it up, especially the face. As you can see, it’s still visible. The slab chop effect. It’s actually quite nice. Looks good so far. Oh, yeah. All coming together.
[Music]
Yeah, look at him. Skin looking frosty and blue. Perfect. Oh yeah.

Painting the Lightning

Now we’re going to have to paint the lightning. The most exciting part. And for that, we’re going to be using Come on. ice blue. Ice blue. to give it that really stark bluish sort of lightening effect. And we’re gonna apply this thinly because this is a special plastic. It is a translucent transparent plastic. So, we’re going to have to apply this extremely thinly to give the lightning that sort of fluctuating power sort of look where it’s stronger in other spots and weaker in others. Uh we’re going to be using any well for you use any white.

I’m going to be using a yonic white again. Uh but this time I’m going to be thinning it down with three parts glaze medium because it’s a normal paint, not a contrast. Okay. And I will be applying that translucently over where the uh lightning is closest to the hands and then closest to the ground where it struck.
[Music]
And here comes ice blue again. Two parts contrast medium, one part ice blue.
[Music]
Make sure to apply it to both sides of the sculpt to emphasize the effect. Just because it’s translucent doesn’t mean you have to apply it onto the onto just one side.

Final Look!

Oh my goodness. He looks so good. Yeah. Oh, he looks excellent. Excellent. He looks so good. And remember this is like 99% contrast paints.
[Music]

Paul’s Conclusion

Oo, you look so good. All right, so that’s it for me today. Uh, in part two, we will be painting the three amigos, these guys, plus the actual dungeon. So, it’s going to be a mix of figure painting and diorama making as a whole. Uh, it’s going to be awesome. It’s going to be awesome to see them completed and together. Uh, but for now, um, you know, this is essentially also a second part to the review of QuickGen. and QuickGen hasn’t disappointed me. Available right now on our website uh as both uh individual paints and second wave pre-orders arriving in August. Uh so yes uh you can pre-order the sets uh if you missed out on the first wave. That’s it for me today. Thank you guys so much for watching for me and the little guy. I’ll see you guys next time.

Bye-bye.
