Initial Information:

This release introduces the late-production Messerschmitt Bf109 G-6 as a variation kit within Tamiya’s renowned 1/48 Aircraft Series, expanding on Item 61117, which represents the early-production version. While retaining the highly accurate overall form developed through extensive research—and the distinctive feature of interchangeable open or closed engine cowlings even after assembly—this kit adds newly tooled parts to depict hallmark elements of the late G-6. These include revised engine cowlings, the Erla Haube canopy with improved visibility, and formidable 21cm rocket launchers mounted beneath the wings. Builders can enjoy exploring and comparing the subtle yet important differences between this kit and Item 61117.

About the Actual Aircraft

With total production exceeding 30,000 units, the Messerschmitt Bf109 remains the most widely produced fighter aircraft in history. Among its many variants, the G-6 was the most numerous, with roughly 13,000 examples built from the summer of 1943 onward. This version is recognized by its distinctive engine cowling configuration, featuring a small bulge and an air intake beneath the right-side nose bulge—known in German as the “Beule”—as well as smaller machine-gun ballistic groove panels on the upper nose. Toward the end of 1943, many G-6 aircraft adopted the Erla Haube canopy, notable for its reduced framing that significantly improved pilot visibility. From August 1943, some aircraft were also fitted with 21cm rocket launchers to counter Allied four-engine heavy bombers operating from the United Kingdom. Serving on both the Western and Eastern Fronts, the Bf109 G-6 proved especially effective against Soviet forces and remained in front line use until the final stages of World War II.
