Description

Derived from its predecessor SM75, the “Marsupiale” was the most famous transport aircraft of the Regia Aeronautica during the Second World War. Like all the most famous aircraft produced by the Savoia Marchetti company, it was characterized by the adoption of three radial engines and by its structure in steel tubes, wood and canvas covering. The strong point of the SM82 was its large fuselage capable of carrying a significant amount of men, materials and vehicles. The “Marsupiale” was in fact used for tactical transport on all the Italian fronts of the Second World War, from Africa to Russia, and always performed its job very well. It was also used for the transport and launch of paratroopers. The qualities of the SM 82 were also appreciated by the Luftwaffe which used several specimens. After the armistice it was used both by the Air Force of the Social Republic and by the Co-belligerent Air Force. After the war it remained in service until the 1960s, confirming the good characteristics of the project.
