Intro

Hey there, welcome to another Loisirs vers le soleil YouTube channel video and today we’re going to be talking about [music] pigments. That’s right, the daunting little powders that you see in all your hobby stores. You may be wondering how to use them, well today we’ll answer that question. There’s actually two ways [music] to use them, both dry and wet. So yeah, sit back, relax or you can follow along, grab your favourite minis and let’s get cracking. Or actually in this case, let’s get dusting. But before we get dusting, every single item shown in this video is available on our website right now, sunwardhobbies.ca. What We’re Using

For today’s video, we will be using AK Track Rust [music] pigments. This will be applied onto the bottoms of these shipping armoured containers, they’re called the armoured containers [music] from the Battlezone box. Typically you find these on actual game tables and a lot of game tables these days, a lot of people have them as a brown sort of battlefield. [music] That’s why we’re using track rust, it’s very, very brown. Finally, I have a little bit of soapy water. Now I’ll say a little bit, I applied a tiny pin [music] prick of soap plus a lot of water. Dish washing or hand soap, it doesn’t matter. And then finally, I have a number 10 effects synthetics brush [music] just because the model is big. Otherwise, use a smaller brush for this one.

Dry Application

I’ll be applying pigments at the lower sort of portion of [music] this container where the odds of it getting dust is quite high. So let’s just stay here for now. For the soapy water version, I’ll be using the number three synthetic detail brush from Vallejo. And [music] don’t overload your brush, just take tiny little bit and dry [music] out most of it with a paper towel, and then just hit the parts where you want it to stay. [music] Just a little bit. Just literally that. Just dab. And what this does is [music] it makes sure that your pigments get stuck on the mini. So, it’s not quite sort of a dry step. The dry main part is a very deceiving. But, as you can see, I already applied it onto the foot, [music] and it’s already drying pretty quickly. And you can’t really rub that off once it’s already [music] dry. When it comes to the dry application, we’re done. That’s [music] it.

Obviously, prior to applying the soapy water, you may have to make sure that you fade out the pigments as it goes [music] up the body or the object because the dustiest part will be at the bottom. But, once you do that and you apply the soapy water and it dries, you’re chilling. You’re done. Uh why am I using soapy water? What is it replacing? [music] Pigment binders. That’s what it’s replacing. Why don’t I have a pigment binder? It’s out of stock. It’s one of the most popular things in the store, uh [music] but we all experience this problem. We run out of paints, and we make our own solutions, and this solution [music] is $0.

Wet Application

And now we come to the wet section of this video [music] where we pull out the secret weapon, odourless thinner. Now, this is not really negotiable. Please [music] get odourless thinner. Be wary of mineral spirits. I know you can get it by the gallon out there, but those are a lot stronger than this one. So, please be wary. It might ruin your paints. Just dip your brush of choice, whether thick or thin, [music] and just apply. Now, because this is a shipping container, one [music] where I doubt you know, the civilians who handled it took much care of it, you can be haphazard with the application. [music] Just propagate it as you go along. The important thing is that uh it fades [music] as it goes up.

If you feel like you’ve applied too much at one spot, [music] not to worry, grab your nearest Tamiya cotton swab, and just us dip it onto the odourless thinner. It’s really that simple. Yes, the [music] chemical we use to propagate is what we use to clean. [music] Now, just rub it gently, but not to worry if you’re worried about paint peeling and such, there shouldn’t be [music] any because odourless thinner is quite gentle on the paints. It’s why we use odourless thinner instead of mineral spirits or enamel thinner outright.

Streaking Effect

Second to the last step, this one is basically just a trick. [music] Just apply dry pigment onto the spot that you want, so right there. And you take a brush that’s loaded with odourless thinner, and you [music] just feather down slightly. There we go. You see that? See that? [music] Right there. That’s streaking. That’s how you do proper streaking by just feathering. That’s what the technique is called, just [music] lightly waking it down. And of course, if there’s anything extra, just grab your apply first prior [music] to the actual application on the model.

Paste Application

So, you have the pigments here, they’re dry still, and then you just put odourless thinner on top. You don’t have to put too much. So, I put a decent amount there, and you just mix. So, you have this paste. Looks like chocolate. [laughter] You tell I’m you’re little hungry and just [music] apply. This reverse application or final step is what you would typically use on your tracks. So, if you want caked on mud, this is it. This is the step. And as always, despite of being thick, [music] you can always just propagate it towards other spots by just applying more odourless thinner. Odourless thinner doesn’t have binders on it and that means it can be reactivated [music] or even wiped at any time.

Final Look

So, to finally seal it, you can either reuse the soapy water or better yet, just grab an acrylic matte varnish and lightly spray [music] it to seal the final product. When everything’s said and done, I think you can achieve higher peaks with pigments as [music] compared to washes, whether you use dry or wet, doesn’t really matter. The results are virtually the same [music] and it looks good. These are just shipping containers. Imagine them on an actual miniature.
