Does It Actually Work?

Intro
Hello all. This is David from Sunward Hobbies. And you’re probably asking yourself, why do I have a huge bandage over my eye? And I would answer you like this. You asked too many questions.
In today’s video, we’re going to be taking a look at a new product from AK, their Cyclops UV glue.
What is UV?
This is a product that I am very curious to try myself as I have never used a UV glue before. So, let’s see how it works. UV glue in the simplest possible term is an adhesive that is essentially useless until it is exposed to UV light. Then it starts to bond in just a few seconds. This is a transparent glue, so it’s great for use with uh clear parts. You could potentially even use this to make water effects such as waves or ripples. As I said, it cures when it’s exposed to UV light. And that’s generally when you’re holding the light within 365 to 405 nanometers. So that’s about just eyeball it. Just a few safety concerns to address before we get started. This can cause skin irritation as well as an allergic skin reaction or eye reaction. And it can cause some respiratory irritation as well. So, as long as you’re not dabbing this behind your ear or taking big whiffs of it, then you should be fine. Maybe even use gloves if you need to. It’s always better to be safe.
Closer Look
So, uh, the kit comes with a precision applicator that you can just attach onto the bottle like so. And that’ll help you apply this glue into very small, hard-to-reach areas. The consistency of this glue is somewhat runny, but still has some viscosity to it. I would compare it to BSI’s Gap Filling CA glue in terms of consistency. Now, the good thing about UV glue is that because it doesn’t bond at all until you shine UV light on it, that gives you essentially infinite wiggle room to make sure you’ve got the glue in the right spot. And if you made a mistake putting it somewhere you didn’t want to, you can just wipe it off with a paper towel.
Application Demo Comparison
Okay, it’s time for me to shut up and start demonstrating this. So, for comparison’s sake, I’m going to try attaching this wind strut with Tamiya Extra Thin cement.
As you can see, if you just let it go, it’s not going to stay up. You’ve got to hold it in place for quite a while. And who has time for that?
You could also use CA glue and then an accelerator which as you can see works great. It is bonded instantly. However, let’s say you had to do some rigging and you had to attach a few hard points on each end of this strut. Okay, so you get to your rigging. you’ve got all your uh rigging lines set to go and then you go to apply some CA glue where they are going to be uh bonded and then you find that the glue is instantly hardening as soon as it touches the surface and you just simply cannot get the rigging to stick. It is precisely first world problems like this why I wanted to try out this UV glue. So, let’s see what it’s got.
UV Demo
So, as you can see, it’s not doing anything right now. Just wobbling about. But here comes the magic.
Oh. Oh, it’s not witchcraft. It’s just UV glue. The box did only mention clear and plastic parts, but I want to see if this will work on metal as well.
Metal Part Test
Success. And now for my final magic trick. I want to see how well the UV glue works with rigging thread. Now, uh, somehow the antenna on my P47 broke off at some point, so I’m going to attach the rigging to this little mirror here instead.
Rigging Test
We have a winner.
David’s Conclusion
That is a big relief. Now I can finally build my World War I planes and rig them with 100% confidence.
In conclusion, AK UV glue is awesome. It is a great adhesive alternative for if you want something that can bond instantly, but still gives you the wiggle room to get it just right. And you can find this awesome product at Loisirs vers le soleil in store or online. Thank you very much for watching this video. Remember to like, comment, subscribe, follow us on our socials, and I got to go get my eye fixed.
So until the next one, adios.
