Painting PERFECT Gold Using the Vallejo BSL System

Using the Angel Giraldez Method

Intro

Welcome in. My name is Paul from Loisirs vers le soleil. If you’re new to the channel, welcome. If you’re not, it doesn’t matter.

Welcome in. Hi. Today we will be painting gold, but it’s not just going to be a painting video. This will be a mini book review. So, let let me show you my canvas or the model kit of my choice. It is extremely important. My canvas or model kit of choice will be the Allarus Custodian Terminators from Warhammer 40k. Well, first and foremost, I chose them because they’re gold. They’re like 99% gold, uh, minus the cape, the tassels, and all that. Uh, so yes, that’s why I chose them. But number two, there’s actually a more specific and forthright reason, and that is in last what, two months ago, so yeah, January, very early, they they Atelier Jeux did a live stream announcing the expansion of the Custodes range for Horus Heresy.

But Custodians are a little bit of a different faction. You can use a lot if not all their models from Horus Heresy to 40k. There’s a 10,000-year gap, but the faction never really changed all that much. So, a lot of their range can be transferred over to the more popular game 40k. So, if you’re in the from that future and you came from that sort of release and you’re watching this video now, hello.

Step by Step Guide – Using True Metallic Metal with the BSL System by Angel Giraldez

But the recipe I’ll be using today is not my own. In fact, it comes from this book which came out at the same time roughly as Vallejo’s True Metallic Metal Paint line, you know, uh, and it’s meant to be a guide. This book was written in collaboration with Vallejo and a very famous model kit influencer/painter, Angel Giraldez. You know him, I know him. He’s probably the goat. Probably he is the goat. So, yeah. Um, this book is the True Metallic Metal BSL System. That’s base, shade, and light. Um, very comprehensive yet surprisingly incredibly simple.

This book, uh, is meant to be for beginners and experts alike. So, this sort of painting video will not just be a painting video, but a mini sort of book review. Uh, I may even turn this into a series where we review specific sections of the book as we follow along. Maybe I say this part here is incredibly easy for beginners, but this one is impossible or some sort of in between. I review it all throughout while I’m painting, letting you know maybe if the book is worth the money at all. Uh, so yeah, follow along and grab your model kits and your true metallic metal paints and come with me. Let me just show you what each book contains. So re right here the very beginning we have Angel Giraldez’s journey as an influencer and painter but also just the journey on how he came up with the BSL system himself.

And right here is Angel. That’s him on the left. And yeah, the legend himself if you didn’t uh or you haven’t put a face to it, which is almost impossible cuz he’s in every video he’s ever made. But anyway, uh yeah, that’s him. And so as you’re flipping through the pages, you’ll notice that it’s filled to the brim with images of pristinely painted models. These are painted with the paints themselves. Uh and then this is the True Metallic Metal explanation, what it is and whatnot. Uh so presentation wise, the book is honestly a 10 out of 10.

Um so if you’re looking for a presentation sort of review, this is very very vibrant and very very attractive, especially for beginners. Lots and lots of images. But as you’re flipping through the pages, you’ll notice, notice these sort of windows and comic panel style things, right? This is very important because that’s the bread and butter of the entire sort of step-by-step system that they have in this book, right? Cuz they’re numbered, as you can see, 1 2 3 and four.

But each corresponding number and panel has a direct explanation, so they don’t leave you out to dry. Oh, what’s that? What am I looking at? Oh, yeah. Each and every purchase of this book comes with a signed bookmark. That’s the True Metallic Metal bookmark. And again, it’s signed by Angel himself. So, yeah, there we go. Very quickly, each item shown in this video is actually available for purchase on our website. Links in the description down below. That’s sunwardhobies.ca. So, grab the miniature of your choice. In my case, it will be the Allarus Custodian Terminators from Warhammer 40k. specifically the Custodes faction, Adeptus Custodes. Uh, but you can grab any sort of gold appropriate miniature. Even just if you’re painting a bank vault diorama, you’re painting coins, grab them and paint them.

Undercoating

So, I’m going to be undercoating this miniature with Vallejo spray black of the most appropriate black primer for our paint job today. If you have any alternatives like Chaos Black from Citadel, for example, you’re more than welcome to use it. Army Painters Black as well, very nice. So long as it’s a glossish black primer, you’re good. And there we go. It’s been primed black. And whether you have matte gloss or semi-gloss, doesn’t really matter. What we’re chasing here is the black color of it, right? Because black primers are important for overall metallic paint jobs.

And why? because black primers mutes the plastic colors underneath allowing the metallic colors to shine. And number two, it provides this sort of richy almost weathered look to the metallic almost immediately actually. Uh this is why if you’re doing a lot of beat up, grim dark weathered models, you should always prime with black because you skip essentially a step there when it comes to washing and shading. It’s naturally just much darker, especially onto the recesses. Turning to page 71 of the book, you’ll find the paints you’ll need for today’s video. These are the

Paints Needed – Page 71

four paints we will be using for today’s video. All four of which are from the new True Metallic Metal line. We have the Arcane Gold family, Arcane Gold Base, Shade, Light, et Aérographe. So the BSL there is what the BSL system stands for Base, Shade, and Light. Now technically it’s BSLA, but you know it doesn’t sound as good. Also the airbrush paint is just an airbrushed pre-thin version of the base color itself. So technically they didn’t skip any sort of acronyms cuz they’re both base paints. Step one calls for an application of black primer, but we’ve already done that.

Step 1 (Air Application)

So, step one really is to apply two thin coats of the airbrush pre-thin version of Arcane Gold. Uh, now it does it doesn’t say two thin coats, but we will be applying two thin coats. And not the brand, but the saying/unwritten rule. You should be applying two thin coats per step. Four months ago, Angel Giraldez, remember the writer of the book and the for formulator of the paints themselves, uh he commented this four months ago on our Instagram demo post of True Metallic Metal. One guy was asking uh when the rest of the paints are coming.

He doesn’t need the airbrush paints because he doesn’t have an airbrush. And then Angel replied with that. Pause if you want to read. basically saying you don’t need an airbrush to paint the airbrush paints. They are specially formulated to work just as well whether you’re brush painting or airbrushing because look at this. Wow. It’s done. To be honest with you, we can stop right here. It’s the best gold ever put to a model kit. Not because of my skill, by the way, but because of the paints themselves. the greatest gold of all time. Maybe just to check our work, look at step one to step one. Beautiful. They weren’t lying. No added effects there. Spot on.

Step 2 (Shade Application)

So, step two, 5.2 right there. We will be using 77157. That is Arcane Gold Shade. We’ll be applying it onto said recesses. That should be doable. I think this is a very beginner friendly step. And yeah, we’ll just apply it onto the recesses but not onto the flatter areas. We try to avoid that for this gold recipe. But you notice even though we apply it onto the recesses, it will give the illusion that it is much darker. And to be honest, it does go a shade darker cuz the vast majority of this armor is recesses. There’s so many hidden details.

You’re going to put a shade on every single one of them. It won’t be perfect, but make sure you just have a precise brush. For this step right here, I’ll be using Vallejo detail brush one. Very precise fine point brush. Just apply it onto the recesses. And yes, it is a brown. Um, so it’s again, it won’t be perfect, but just apply it onto the recesses. And speaking of washes, just a heads up, the washes from this line of Vallejo paints are not metallic. They are meant to be blending paints for the base, the light, and the airbrush paints. They are not metallic paints. As such, to be honest with you, they are now the best water-based washes in the market as well. So, this paint line by Vallejo is just breaking all kinds of records. So, let’s say Obsidian Black.

That is the wash/shade for the Obsidian Black family in true metallic metal. That is also a straight up black wash. And it is, I’m telling you guys, the best. It is incredible. Forget null oil, forget dark tone. Use that if you can find it because it’s so popular. People are slowly but surely starting to realize it as well. Yeah. precisely apply it and just avoid the flat panels where the sh the sun sorry will shine go in between right there with the shade applied it’s now taken on a whole new personality one where there’s a lot more obvious detail going on where it might have been lost by the luster of the gold prior and just to compare it to the book itself not lying once again no effects done good Job, Vallejo. And yes, it is a very dark brown wash.

Uh slightly darker than Agrax’s Earth Shade. So if you want to use this for your golds, feel free. It’s incredible as well. Very vibrant. I thinned down mine with a little bit of water, just a tiny bit, like one drop. But out the bottle, perfect. Just make sure you shake it.

Step 3 (50/50 Shade and Highlight Application)

Step three calls for a 50/50 ratio/mix of the Arcane Gold Light and base specifically. uh 50/50 so that uh there’s an even sort of distribution between how long it goes uh where I’m talking about mainly the drying time, right? Because the base paint lasts the longest and of course I’m talking about the vibrancy because that’s what the light Arcane Gold and just the light category does in general. It’s meant for edge highlighting.

Combining the two, you get the best of both worlds. To get from this to this, you’re going to need both. We’ll go two drops of the base. One. Two. And we’ll go two drops of the light just to keep it even. Two. Because it’s not really a number particularly uh guessed about. It’s really just so it’s even and we don’t run out. Yeah. Even as in it’s an even number. That’s it. I don’t want to do one in one. It’s kind of boring. For step three, the brush we’ll be using is the XL Vallejo Dry Brush. Just mix the two. Mix the two.

Grab paper towel. Then just remove 95% of said excess while pushing the paint further into the brush bristles. Once you’re satisfied with the removal, you dry brush the miniature. That’s about it. We’ll just be doing an incredibly light dry brush, just the surface, just to bring back the shine on the raised details. There we go. We’re seeing a lot of the shine come back. Very nice. While keeping the recesses nice and dark. Oh yeah. Step three. Done. And this is where we’re going to encounter some sort of variance between your result and mine because you can apply a little lighter of a dry brush. I went heavy on mine. As a result, this is what you’re seeing.

A massive contrast between the raised details, the flat panels, and the recessed areas. I wanted some sort of contrast between all three. And look at that. To be honest, I think it panned out. But you can always apply according to the steps here, more of the shade or more of the highlights or the base where applicable. So you can fix this up on the fly, no problem, because all three colors are still very prominent.

Step 4 (Highlight Application)

In fact, the final step, step four here, tells you to do a final dry brushing of Arcane Gold Light, but also in the same manner, it tells you to bring back colors such as the airbrush paint to smooth things over or maybe correct things that you’ve over applied just so the transition is a little bit better. Um, and nothing says here to use an airbrush. In fact, with all the paints layered, it’s actually better to use a brush paint instead or a brush, sorry. Uh, meaning and implying directly that you don’t have to use an airbrush to use the airbrush paints, which is awesome.

And to be honest, I’m going to extend this to every single other paint we’ve applied, especially if you’ve retained it like I did, right? because all three from the raised areas to the flat panels and the recesses are still very vis visible. Just depends on which one you want to be the most prominent. Here we go. Final dry brushing step. This time with pure arcane gold light and the lightest dry brush possible, barely touching the model just to provide a little bit of luster, a little bit of shine. And then with a precise brush right here, I will be applying a little bit of the airbrush paint in between the most prominent raised areas and the recesses just so that we have a smoother transition as the book implies.

So, we’re going to be avoiding that little dot there on the shoulder, but then avoiding the actual recesses itself, right? To bring back some sort of detail. So, for a flat panel like this, maybe just the middle of it, apply a tiny bit. You don’t have to do this, by the way. You could have stopped right there with the dry brushing and it would have been perfect. But I want it to be a little bit better. Just a tiny bit. So literally put the airbrushing paint in between. Just a little bit in between. Right there. This a final touch up avoiding the innermost recesses. So the eagle wings for example, just right there, the flat parts of the eagle wings. Right. Wow.

Final Result

After the touch-ups and the final dry brushing, not in that order, it’s done. Incredible job, Vallejo. I’m not even crediting myself for this paint job. This is all the paints. Well done, Vallejo. Well done, Angel. This is crazy.

Book Overview

And yes, let’s rate the book. So, yeah, stab uh page 71, Emperor’s Bodyguard. This specific page right here is a 10 out of 10 instruction. And don’t get it twisted. This is an instruction manual. This book, uh, basically it’s an instruction manual for a specific type of paint, specific type of paint job, for a specific type of miniature. And to be honest, again, complicated yet very beginner friendly. In fact, so beginner friendly, I can’t really see a point of failure beyond two miniature tiny things, which would be in step two. instead of you precisely applying the wash or shade, you dunk it. You just slap it on all over.

Um, it’s a little too dark for that. Uh, it will vastly affect the U of your paint and it’s going to be hard to recover. You’re going to slap on too much uh dry brushing paint for you to recover that. Uh, and then the other point of failure would be in the two dry brushing steps right here, but let’s treat it as one. Uh basically if you fail to remove the vast majority of your paint from your dry brush and it’s still wet and it’s still on your brush, you will mess up your uh miniature. But other than that, other than those two things, this is so dummy proof. It’s actually incredible. Um well done Vallejo. Uh well done, Angel. You gave me a new paint recipe for the upcoming Custodes release.

This is now my recipe. So yeah, one more look for the road. I added a tiny bit more highlights, uh, shadows with the shade, and then a bit more of the airbrush to blend it all together. Tiny bit more, but not too much more. So yeah, well done. This is basically a 10 out of 10 paint job for four simple steps essentially. Um, and I just have to paint the rest.

What is this? The tassels, the cape, and what is what do you call this part? Ponytail. Anyway, thank you Vallejo. Thank you, Angel. That’s me giving a thumbs up. It was a very successful day.

Paul’s Conclusion

But I’m not just talking about the paint job itself. I’m talking about me. It was very successful for me because that tiny bit of airbrushing you saw, which hopefully gets sped up while you’re editing the footage, u please, is amateur because it was amateur. That was my first time airbrushing on camera. My first time airbrushing in a very very long time. Essentially my first time ever. Long story.

It’s been so long it might as well be. Uh so yeah. Um and even with my amateur airbrushing techniques, I couldn’t mess it up. So yeah, incredible instruction manual there. Emperor’s Bodyguards, page 71 is what I followed on the book. And that particular part, 10 out of 10. And we will be reviewing the book peace meal by peace meal like this painting as we go along to see whether or not it does end up panning out like they say. And so far it does. So yeah. So that’s all the time we have for today. Thank you guys for watching.
