Introduction to Tone Pro
Goodbye none. This is David from Sunward Hobbies and today is opposite day. That is because in today’s video I’m [music] going to be talking about something that you would normally expect from Paul Warhammer. And to be specific, we have in our midst a sampler set of Warhammer’s brand new tone pro paints. This new paint line features [music] 30 patented colors, each with five tones from dark to light, totaling 150 new paints. And I know what you’re thinking. This sounds way more economical than just buying the one [music] paint as well as a white and a black and lightening and darkening the color respectively. And to that I say you’re right. Anyway, long intro short. This is going to be a two-part [music] training exercise testing these new paints.
I will be doing a video showcasing them as well as Paul later in the week. Now, it does sound a little odd the both of us doing two separate videos on the exact same [music] thing. So to help differentiate it, I am going to test how these [music] paint with an airbrush and likely Paul will be testing them with regular paint brushes. So let’s check it out. [music]
Preparation and Setup
As you can count, they have sampled us with 19 of their new paints. [music] Now, I’m not going to go too deep into the specs of these paints as uh I’m sure Paul will in his video. All I can say is that they claim to have exceptional coverage. So, I guess because I’m the military guy, the tones I will be going with these greens, I don’t know if I can say the name without getting copyright stricken. So, I’ll just show you. And I am going to test them on this guy, whoever he is. I’m sure Paul won’t mind if I borrow him.
So, they’re still using the classic Citadel, Warhammer, whatever you want to call it, uh, paint bottles, which aren’t airbrush friendly, but, uh, it’s no big deal. Hm. For a paint that claims to have exceptional coverage, this actually feels quite thin. I was expecting it to be as thick as putty, to be honest. So, as you noticed, I’ve already pre- primed this figure in black. And first thing I’m going to test is the darkest shade of this green. So, I’m going to just airbrush that all over the whole thing. And then basically what we’ll do next is the midtone. [music] I’m going to spray that on an angle so that it highlights only the areas where light [music] would realistically hit it. And then with the highlight, I will take a a dry brush most likely and just gently apply that on all the raised areas.
Airbrushing the Miniature
So I’m going to quickly try thinning this with Vallejo airbrush thinner. Hopefully I get the consistency I want with it and then we’ll start painting. So I’ve thinned the paint about 5050 paint [music] to airbrush thinner. So, [music] that is our base layer done. It’s early, but I must say that uh Citadel paint, Warhammer paint, it uh it airbrushes quite nice. I’d uh I’d probably use it myself if it weren’t for all [music] the confusing names. But, uh anyway, yeah, so far I’m liking it. [music] We got a nice dark green base to work off of. So that means we are now going to move on to [music] the midtone which is shade number three of this particular green. So again I’m going to mix that up and we will start painting again. All right, we’re getting some serious color variation now. So, those are down. I’m done airbrushing for this video.
Dry Brushing Highlights
Now, I’m just going to apply the highlight with an old brush and nothing more. I’m sure I don’t have to reiterate this, but uh when dry brushing, you always want to make sure there’s as little paint on the brush as possible. And I’m just going to pick out any raised details. Well, uh, nothing to complain about here. That was, uh, a pleasant experience. So, not only do these paints brush on well, [music] they evidently airbrush very good, too. And considering I used Vallejo airbrush thinner for these paints, I am safe in assuming that any acrylic [music] airbrush thinner would be compatible with these.
Review and Conclusion
In conclusion, is selling the same paint in five different tones at a premium price excessive? I am not at liberty to say, but it sure is convenient, is it not? Admittedly, it is easier to have [music] a popular paint and all of its tonal variations, so you can just low light and highlight [music] to your heart’s content. and especially when the paint [music] has such nice coverage and is great for use with a brush and even an airbrush. So, yes, I would recommend these paints, and I’m sure my colleague Paul will have very nice things to say about it in his review [music] as well.
So, be sure to pick some up for yourself at Sunward Hobbies in store [music] or online. And if you are watching this video at a later time and you’ve already got several of these paints, then feel free to let us know in the comments how you feel about them. So, thank you very much for watching this [music] video. Remember to like, comment, subscribe, follow us on our socials, and until the next one. Ola.
