Intro
Why won’t you make like a tree and get out of here? Leave. Make like a tree and leave already.
Hello all. This is David from Sunward Hobbies. And would you believe it, we’re already halfway through March and I’ve been sitting here for over a week waiting for this wood to start sprouting some green. Well, if it’s going to take its sweet time, then I guess I’ll have to do it myself. like everything else.
Products Needed
In today’s video, I’m going to show you how to make your own trees with nothing but some products from Woodland Scenics and your personal longing for spring to arrive. All right. Now, pay attention, my aspiring botness, as I’m going to show you everything you need to make some trees. First, you’ll need some plastic tree armatures, some clump foliage, and or some fine leaf foliage, some Hob-e-Tac adhesive, and lastly, a bowl or a box to put the foliage in. Now that I’ve outlined everything, let’s get started.
Preparing the Armature
Step one is preparing the armature. Now, as you’ll notice immediately, it’s not the most convincing looking wood, but there’s nothing to stop you from painting this whatever colour you like to make it more realistic. Another thing of note is it has ejector marks all over it on this side at least. So, quick and easy way to get rid of that.
There you go. All right. First thing you want to do is rip this thing this off. And because this is plastic, uh you can twist and bend these to make the tree look uh less flat, more three-dimensional. So there, as you see, it has more shape to it.
Just Sprouted Tree Example
Now, now for this first example, I’m going to be showing you a tree that is just started to sprout some leaves. So, it’ll be very light. I’m going to place this napkin here and take some fine leaf foliage which is packaged on this uh little branch here and just peel some pieces off. Now take some Hob-e-Tac. This is a water soluble glue and it comes with a brush applicator on the cap. Take your glue and place some on all the branches. Try not to get it on the trunk.
Now, the glue is white to start, but once it dries, it’ll be completely clear. But before that happens, let’s put some of our foliage on. Just take some pieces. And because the glue is very tacky, they stick on immediately without any resistance. And there you go. In less than 10 minutes, you’ve got one tree. And with the uh little stand that each armature comes with, you can just pop it in. Or of course, if you are working on a diorama and you got a foam base, you can just poke that in there. So, there we have one beautiful tree. Now, let me show you something crazy. I’ve got a second armature here ready to go.
Full Bloom Tree Example
So, now I’ve got clump foliage. This is very dense and thick foliage. all obviously clumped together. As you remember when I showed you uh the bag in the intro, it uh was all condensed. So, I’ve already pulled apart some pieces, but uh I’ll pull apart a few more just to show you. I assure you that this is product for uh hobbies, not uh anything else. three row buds all pulled apart and ready to go. So, some people may have watched me making this tree and thought, “Well, that takes too long. I want something instant.”
So, I’ve already put glue on the second armature and I’ve got my box of clump foliage. Now, check this out. Instant tree. I know you railroad guys like to have things done quick. So, there you go. In about 15 minutes, you’ve made two realistic looking trees to add to your diorama.
David’s Conclusion
In conclusion, it’s truly amazing what you can create in this hobby with just a few products. Too bad we can’t summon spring that easily. So, you can browse through our vast catalog of Woodland Scenic products at Sunward Hobbies in store or online. Thank you very much for watching the video.
