The Modelcolor range contains over 200 colours and an extensive assortment of mediums and varnishes, designed especially for Miniature and Modelpainting. Those colours which have corresponding Federal Standard, Ral, and RLM equivalencies are so identified.
Modelcolor has been formulated with permanent pigments for fine arts; all colours are completely lightfast and opaque, (with the exception of the fluorescent and transparent colours, which are semi-opaque). A few metallic pigments (in an alcohol base) are included in the range, since these give a harder brilliance than the water based metallics.
The consistency of Modelcolor allows for an extremely smooth and uniform paintfilm, with no trace of brushstrokes. Professional model painters always work with a wet brush and dilute the paint with water or Mat Medium, applying many thin layers to achieve depth and shadows. Colours may also be diluted with other Mediums for glazes and layered applications.
The water based formula of Modelcolor has been specifically developed for adherence on difficult surfaces such as metal and plastic, but is not toxic, not flammable, and no noxious fumes. Errors can be corrected immediately with water or alcohol Modelcolor dries quickly to a matte, even and waterproof finish. Exact drying time depends on various factors although the colors are dry to the touch within minutes, the paint does not acquire its true permanence until several weeks after application.

Vallejo Model Color is one of my go to brands for all things painting. Smooth application, ease of use and excellent final result are some of the reasons I choose Vallejo. This is a nice sky blue. A very vibrant color. I use it as a base for my recipe for ghastly creatures as seen in the attached picture. This is a very easy scheme/result that even a beginner can achieve.
Here is a quick guide to how I achieve these results, and the method is definitely scalable for batch painting and translatable for similar schemes using different colors. It requires this sky blue paint, a white paint, Citadel Talassar Blue Contrast Paint and preferably an ultra matte varnish for the best finish.
1.Prime figure with your choice of primer color. I prefer black, but any will do for the purposes here
2. Fully base coat the figure with the deep sky blue paint
3.Apply Citadel Talassar Blue Contrast Paint in heavy amounts, you want some pooling to occur in places you normally wouldn't here (outside of recesses) to help create a varied and ethereal spectral appearance. Just glob it on all over, you need not be concerned with where most of it ends up, but do make sure to get it into the crevices as you would normally with a contrast paint or equivalent. How heavy is ultimately up to you. If you want a darker blue shade, put on a heavier coat, if you want to lean into the lighter shades, use less.
4.heavy drybrush application of deep sky blue, an overbrush being the technical term.
5. Light drybrush application of white (cold white is my preferred)
6.Apply ultra matte varnish until all reflection and shine is removed (this is important to sell the ethereal look, as reflections of light imply a solid object, ultra matte varnish will greatly improve the end result, I use AK interactive Ultra Matte)
7. Optionally, you can use a white contrast paint for the skin and face or other defining features to add some character. I also used a white ink glaze to give the appearance like they are fading into this dimension on the edges.
Attached are three separate applications of this technique. The figures are from Northstar Military Figures, Spectral Infantryman, under their Napoleonic Horror themed Silver Bayonet range for a skirmish game of the same name.
Definitely recommend all of the Vallejo Model Color range.
