A colorless glaze which is used to mix with acrylic colors; improves fluidity, increases transparency, and slows drying time. Ideal for shadows, shadings, glazes and working with pigments.
The Modelcolor range contains over 200 colours and an extensive assortment of mediums and varnishes, designed especially for Miniature and Modelpainting. Those colours which have corresponding Federal Standard, Ral, and RLM equivalencies are so identified.
Modelcolor has been formulated with permanent pigments for fine arts; all colours are completely lightfast and opaque, (with the exception of the fluorescent and transparent colours, which are semi-opaque). A few metallic pigments (in an alcohol base) are included in the range, since these give a harder brilliance than the water based metallics.
The consistency of Modelcolor allows for an extremely smooth and uniform paintfilm, with no trace of brushstrokes. Professional model painters always work with a wet brush and dilute the paint with water or Mat Medium, applying many thin layers to achieve depth and shadows. Colours may also be diluted with other Mediums for glazes and layered applications.
The water based formula of Modelcolor has been specifically developed for adherence on difficult surfaces such as metal and plastic, but is not toxic, not flammable, and no noxious fumes. Errors can be corrected immediately with water or alcohol Modelcolor dries quickly to a matte, even and waterproof finish. Exact drying time depends on various factors although the colors are dry to the touch within minutes, the paint does not acquire its true permanence until several weeks after application.

This is my second favourite glaze medium after pro-acryls "Miracle" Glaze/Wash medium. With that said, it is excellent for both those purposes as well. Essentially you thin your paint on the palette with this medium as usual, just with a considerably higher medium to paint ratio. You then take some on your brush, and dab it on your paper towel (the master hobbyist knows to always have a little paper towel ready to go on your working surface during your paint sessions). This is to remove the excess water/medium, while retaining a very thinned paint. You then apply multiple coats to highlight, shade or transition between the two to a middle color. Shading is much easier than highlighting when it comes to glazing. While a beginner can try it, there are complications and nuance involved I would recommend watching a YouTube tutorial or reading up on the technique otherwise. I personally would recommend Vince Venturella's "Hobby Cheating" series on YouTube, wherein he has an episode on glazing. He's a great teacher and eloquent enough to explain things better than I ever could while offering a visual aid. Attached is a picture where the glazing method was put to use in order to achieve the shades and highlights on the clothing and skin. The metallic parts of his helmet and armor were achieved using AK Interactive True Metal Old Bronze. While the sword was coated with an AK Interactive True Metal metallic pen, specifically the steel/silver one. Conveniently, both these items alongside the subject of this review are also available here at Sunward Hobbies; the best hobby shop in North America, hands down! The figure itself is by Lucid Eye Productions, under their ZIGGURAT range.
Vallejo Model Color Colour Glaze Medium 73596 60ml
For me the Vallejo glaze medium is essential to my Warhammer painting. I like to do very thin coats for shading and gradients. This is perfect as all you need is to do is add a drop or two and away you go.
