Gold Paint Over Brown Primer?

Using a Brown/Mahogany Primer

Transcript*

Intro

Yes, it’s back. So, now that it’s back, we can actually do this sort of experiment. Basically, we will be finding out whether the gold is better when the kit underneath is primed with gloss black. This is Vallejo black or Mahogany or Brown, which is 1,000 from Mr. Hobby. We’ll find out which is better uh to do gold because obviously traditionally as you all are aware gloss black is what everyone uses not just for metallics but for gold as well and it comes out beautiful but I’ve heard whispers that um Mahogany or Brown is better for gold actually. So we’ll find out today.

Disclaimer

Disclaimer, heavy disclaimer. Just because you see mahogany here does not mean that every uh Surfacer and top coat has been allowed back into Canada. That’s not true at all. For whatever reason, Mahogany 1000 in liquid form is the only one that’s allowed. Even the Mahogany 1000 spray version is not in, meaning it’s still banned. We recently had a somewhat major to uh Mr. Hobby re-stock. We brought in the S sprays, so they’re not banned. Leveling Thinner not banned. And of some History course, for whatever reason, this is not banned, even though the rest of the line is. Who knows? So, yeah, that’s the disclaimer. Same with Tamiya. TS AS PS liquid sprays are all still banned. Okay, Kabish.

Products Needed

So, today we’ll be finding out if brown offers the same sort of richness that black does on a gold miniature. We’ll be using the new sculpts from Horus Heresy. The Custodians. This is the Custodian Guard Sodality. Individual kits are available on our website right now. Links in the description down below. And then we’ll paint them using uh true metallic metal arcane gold. Links in the description down below as well. So, yes, Leveling Thinner is back. Whoopee.

Levelling Thinner

And you’ll be uh mixing equal parts Leveling Thinner and equal parts Mahogany 1000 into our HS30K gravity feed gun. I’ll just mix it directly into the cup. No big deal. It’s okay. Um it’s not too thick anyway, the mahogany. So that’s all right. And because it’s Leveling Thinner, you can actually brush paint the Mahogany on because this is lacquer. So lacquer dries so fast. But with leveling thinner, it delays it enough with the retarder function that you can comfortably brush paint smaller miniatures. If it’s big, I wouldn’t count on it. Airbrush, please. But, uh, miniatures like this, features List yeah, you can probably just hand brush it. I’m just choosing to use an airbrush. Wear a mask when airbrushing. All right. Especially lacquer paints, wear a mask. All right. Custodian Guard has been primed with Mahogany 1000.

Vallejo True Metallic Metal Application

So, now we hit it with True Metallic Metal Arcane Gold, my preferred gold for Custodes. And funny thing about this, shout outs to Vallejo for coming up with this despite it being tagged airbrushing implying that it is pre-thinned. Um, you can actually brush paint with this also directly out of the bottle. So, there’s something here in the formula that allows us to do both at the same time or one or the other. Uh, so yeah, that’s awesome. some sort of genius came up with that formula because their previous airbrush paints like Model Air for example, you can’t do that. It’s uh you can just use it for airbrushing.

Caladius Tank

Miserable experience to brush paint. And if somehow you still don’t see what I’m talking about, scale surely you see it now. This is the Caladius Grav Tank. Again, new product. Links in the description down below. Painted in the exact same way. Mahogany to gold. Wow. And yes, the turret does move 360 at that. It’s so vibrant, so rich. Surely you see what I’m talking about now, right? Oh, yeah. I haven’t attached it yet because I’m painting it in segments, but there is. Yeah, there we go. Wow. And this is not me. This is not my skill at all, by the way. These are just painting techniques and shortcuts. And yeah, this technique works, guys. This technique definitely works. And there we go. This is primed with mahogany 1000.

Finished Models

And then we applied two thin coats of Arcane Gold on top. And the result is a very rich yellow gold that has the details from the weathering because it’s dark but not enough to where it sort of mutes some details. And you’ll see what I mean soon. Where in the other miniature you have to tilt it at a certain angle to see some of the parts because it definitely does dim the miniature a little bit.

So it is, I think, a very good sort of compromise from what you traditionally use, which is either white or gray. Um, but not enough to where you like compromise, funnily enough, the details. So here it is compared to the Shield Captain Primed in black. See what I mean? Like you’ll have to see it like that. So, if you want something ultra washed, then definitely go black gloss. But to be honest with you, the brown provides a sort of richer, warmer finish. They’re virtually identical, but the black might have been overdone. Like just I didn’t overdo anything.

Just I’m saying that the black itself mutes too much. So, in any other metallic paints, black gloss is the better move. But for gold, brown might be the way. And I’ll show you with another miniature here. This is uh the new Shield Captain and the 40k Shield Captain. Shield Captain, of course, same principle, Mahogany plus Arcane Gold. And then we have the old 40k one from a couple years ago. Uh yeah. Now this is still really good. Really good. But this is a bright gold with details basically. Wow. So, what do you guys think? Uh was I correct? I think I’m correct.

Paul’s Conclusion

Uh it looks beautiful painted with Mahogany Brown plus the Arcane Gold. It’s just more gold, warmer, richer. Um, and yeah, I think this is now my new recipe. Or do you think I’m delusional that I got scoped by someone in the comments of my last video uh into buying mahogany brown? Was that guy maybe a Mr. Hobby enthusiast, a shareholder? Who knows? Well, regardless whether it was a scoop or not, every single product in today’s video is available in the description down below. sunwardhobbies.ca, including Mahogany Brown and Leveling Thinner.
